Construction Begins ~ McArthur Farm Supply ~ McArthur, Ca

McArthur Farm Supply will be moving into the new decade with a planned remodel. This remodel will not only modernize the Farm Supply, but will also allow our staff to better accommodate the needs of our customers. Beginning June 1st, 2010, the Farm Supply will see the front entrance restructured and extended which will improve our curb appeal and allow for more retail space. This phase will also include replacement of the old roof covering the entire store. It is expected that this portion of the project will be completed by August 1st; just in time for the Intermountain Fair and the McArthur Cutting Horse Show!

The second phase of construction will see the extension and remodel of the back counter and office spaces. To help improve customer service, our back counter will be modified into an L-shape. A walk-way will lead directly out the back of the store so that customers and vendors are able to reach the back counter without going through the front if they need to. More office space will be created for our staff to improve communication and service. Included in this plan, is a conference room that can be set aside for grower meetings and other activities that can aid our customer base. This phase of construction will probably be completed by the end of the year.

With the continued construction, there may be times where we will have to ask for flexibility from our customers. Parking may temporarily change from the front of the building to the south side of our store. Customers may expect to enter the store through the south entrance facing the mini-storage units. This, however, will be only temporary and we can expect to see great things come out of our remodel!

Please be sure to check out the progress of store!

We are eager to see the improvements this new remodel is going to bring to our customers and our staff. Visit www.mcarthurfarmsupply.com for updates and information on the remodel.

McArthur Farm Supply ~ Kevin O’Brien featured in Runner’s World magazine ~ McArthur, Ca

Fall River Mills resident Kevin O’Brien is featured in the April issue of Runner’s World explaining his strategies for managing a hectic work schedule and strong family commitment while training for 13.1 mile half marathons. He is married with two children and is assistant manager at McArthur Farm Supply in McArthur, Ca.

“Blown away,” is the athlete’s description of his profile in the “prestigious magazine.” The modest runner states he is “not a trained athlete by any stretch of imagination” His wife Georgia’s cousin is a former Stanford Universitycoach who consults with the on-line training website, Focus-N-Fly. The coach suggested his”profile fit perfectly” for a developing story titled “Work Hard, Run Hard” for the globally circulated magazine with 650,000 subscribers. O’Brien 33, is one of four runners featured in the article.

He started running in 1996 while a Chico State University student who “ate too many restaurant meals” while a member of the college livestock judging team. “Just in the last four to five years I’ve been more consistent without serious lapses in my running schedule,” he said.

His first half marathon was at Oregon’s Crater Lake. The run was “manageable until mile 9.5 then it climbs for 2.5 miles. Very brutal. It beat me up pretty bad but at 12.5 miles it starts to taper off,” he said. The athlete’s first formal training began last September when he enrolled in the on-line Focus-N-Fly program. O’Brien attributes that program with giving him valuable suggestions such as pacing to improve his time along with a coach’s motivational comments. “It’s like someone is there pushing me to get out of bed and keep me moving” at 4:30 a.m., the intrepid runner said.

A month after enrolling in the training program, he ran the Long Beach, Calif., half-marathon posting a time of 1:29:00. Four months later, O’Brien’s running time was 1:26:00 for the 13.1 mile course during February’s Surf City half-marathon in Huntington Beach, Calif. He finished 21st out of 645 runners in the competitive 30 to 34 age bracket and 85th overall in a field of approximately 11,000 runners.

O’Brien attributes trimming three minutes off is running time to the on-line training program, a fact he repeats several times. “It’s kind of addicting to see how far you can push yourself to see what you can reach in the next race,” O’Brien said with a smile on his face. The humble and shy O’Brien is training for July’s San Francisco half-marathon where he hopes to cut an additional three minutes off his time to qualify for the New York City Marathon in 2011.

At the conclusion of that half-marathon he receives a plaque and coat for finishing the three races in the ”California Dreaming” series. “A year ago, if you had asked me if I was even thinking of trying to qualify for New York or potentially Boston (marathon) I would never guess that,” he said. “Just seeing how well I’ve done in the last few races (Huntington and Long Beach) is a big change,” O’Brien said.

Boston the granddaddy and most prestigious of all marathons, is “full of Olympians and elite runners and you wouldn’t even think about running in that race,” he said reflectively. O’Brien “uses races to keep me focused on running because it gives me a goal to get up (at 4:30 a.m.) in the morning.” He is considering the Portland or Sacramentomarathons next fall or early winter. The on-line training program suggests frequently changing training schedule distances to maximize his two-work day and one long weekend runs. He spends one weekday on his track routine of running intervals, which are short hard efforts, and tempos, which mixes his running pace. Both are key tactics to a runner’s competitive success.“He isn’t a lazy trainer and he isn’t super indulgent after a race, which makes him kind of weird and kind of irritating. He is a pretty level guy,” his wife laughingly said.

O’Brien’s favorite route is the 10.1 mile run from his home, located on Highway 299 in Fall River Mills, to McArthur down the hill and across the Pit River on Jim Day Road to Dee Knoch Road to Fall River Mills and home. “It’s a pretty route and you get some elevation change,” he commented. During the winter, O’Brien usually runson his treadmill while watching son, Emmett, 4, and daughter, Sophia, 2, in the large playroom containing toysfor both Dad and the children. The two motivate him to run so “as these guys get older I wanted to make sure I had the energy to keep up with them.” He said they are his main focus and always in his memory. The runner’s early morning training schedule enables him to spend evening time with his family.

Georgia said all the family receives a fun benefit from his racing because they travel with her husband to competitions. Her brother, sister and mother sometimes participate with him in races. Georgia’s siblings were motivated to run by Kevin. “It wouldn’t be their first choice,” she said. A substitute elementary school teacher, Georgia said, “ It’s important for our kids to grow up hearing about this. For them to hear us talking about his exercise routine or eating healthy.”

O’Brien’s diet has not radically changed. He eats better “but we haven’t gone overboard and cut out certain foods altogether. I try to keep that part of me regular,” he said. His supportive wife said, “The thing I love about this so much is it’s his, entirely his and his success is entirely under his own steam. He’s found notoriety, he’s found success. People are taking notice and given reason to cheer him on.”

After the long drought we are finally seeing some “rain at the end of the tunnel”! The drought was a difficult time for farmers and ranchers who are all feeling much better with the site of rain and snow in the forecast.

Cattle prices are higher than we have seen in a long time and the water is filling up in the lakes and reservoirs so that when needed it can be funneled to the farmers for our vegetables and fruits to feed America.

So much of our lives as farmers and ranchers is dictated by the weather; branding, weaning, planting, and harvesting are all planned by what the weather forecast will be on that day.

So the question is “Does April showers bring May flowers?” I think that this year it will and for all farmers and ranchers their crops will be better than ever due to the additional rain that we are receiving.

To make those crops be the best they can be, make sure you stop by McArthur Farm Supply and check out the large selection of fertilizers and pesticides that can help your crop.

SweetPro Feeds is proud to introduce EquiLix with the FlaxFactor. We’ve formulated EquiLix especially for horses, adding both stabilized milled flax and ProBiotein. Today’s horse owner is more quality conscious than ever because they know good quality produces better results. Those results come in many forms. Some are visual such as a shiny hair coat and bright eye and improved health. Others are reflected in better performance for the working animal. In the end it comes down to economics and that’s where SweetPro’s new EquiLix shines brightly. A healthy horse looks better and costs less to maintain. Now with EquiLix feed efficiency boosts, the cost of maintaining your horse in top condition can be reduced.

How Do We do it?
SweetPro pioneered the solidification of fermentation feeds such as distillers grain into solid blocks and now we’ve developed our own new fermentation process to produce a unique “blend additive” call ProBiotein. Yeast and enzyme levels in ProBiotein greatly enhance the digestion of forages, so horses get more out their hay. Organic complex trace minerals help improve bioavailability of those important minerals. Plus we’re adding the FlaxFactor—stabilized milled flax with its high levels of healthy omega 3 fatty acids.

Feeding Directions

1) Before feeding EquiLix blocks for the first time, animals should be well fed and have access to plenty of clean fresh water.

2) Have one lick block available for each 5 to 15 head of horses.

3) Provide an adequate source of good quality forage at all times.

4) Place lick blocks near areas where animals loaf and at least 100 yards from water.

5) Make EquiLix blocks available in more than one location in large pastures or where more than one water source is available.

6) If animals run out of EquiLix, repeat from step one.

7) Other salt and minerals maybe provide free choice to balance specific rations.

More Information

ProBiotein is a proprietary blend-additive consisting of yeast
culture, prebiotic oligosaccharides, enzymes, and protein isolates.

The Yeast in ProBiotein, cultured on a media of wheat, oats, barley malt and flax, is rich in biotin and other nutrients to aid digestion. The Oligosaccharides, often called “prebiotics,” because they feed the beneficial probiotic bacteria, are a key part of the ProBiotein additive. These prebiotics help maintain good digestive tract health.

Enzymes, the catalysts of digestion are included in a fibrinolytic, amylolytic & proteolytic array to assist fiber, protein and mineral utilization.

Flax helps in many ways. The oil is dense energy which is high in Omega 3 fatty acid content. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid often missing in modern diets. Flax is also among the richest sources of lignans, which help improve immune function. Organic complexed minerals are featured. Zinc, copper and manganese are complexed, or bound to protein instead of other minerals, assuring high bioavailability.

EquiPride also includes ethyl alcohol to raise palatability, enhance fiber digestion and add another non-starch energy source. Now with feed efficiency boost, the cost of maintaining your horse in top condition can be reduced.

Look for up to 25% improvement in forage feed efficiency with SweetPro’s EquiPride.

Digestive Aide, Vitamin and Mineral Supplement for Horses
Horses are hind-gut, foraging herbivores with a comparatively small stomach. A horse left to it’s natural foraging patterns will graze on high fiber grasses and hay many hours of the day allowing its small stomach to balance acid and enzyme digestion with the fermentation digestion of the cecum and colon (hind gut).

Because so many horses are boarded in stalls and non-pasture confines, they are fed in shorter time periods and with more concentrated energy feeds such as grain that is high in starch.

This is where SweetPro® Feeds EquiPride™ is helpful in aiding the digestion of the typical stable diet.

How EquiPride™ Works
Because a horse produces less natural amylase (starch digestive enzyme) than other animals, (i.e. 10% of what hogs produce) the chances are greater for undigested starch reaching the cecum and colon.

The cecum and colon are the areas where feed is digested by other organisms rather than by acid and enzymes. Mostly, the populations of these organisms prefer hay and other forages, not grain. As a result, elevated levels of grain starch force a shift in their population and in the process, acid levels rise and start to cause problems such as colic, laminitis and ulcers.

EquiPride™ as a digestive aide consists largely of externally processed ingredients that have been pre-digested for the horse and improves the nutrient utilization of the horse’s entire ration, as well as adding key nutrients.

ProBiotein™ is the SweetPro® Feeds proprietary “blend additive” in EquiPride™ which constitutes the digestive aide. We stress the blend aspect of ProBiotein™ since digestion is a complex process that is influenced by many factors and combinations of factors. No single “silver bullet” ingredient is going to get the job done.

ProBiotein™
• Enzymes (amylolytic, fibrinolytic, proteolytic);
• Yeast (saccharomyces cerevisiae);
• Fiber and fermentation metabolites;
• Oligosaccharides (prebiotic, i.e., food for probiotic bacteria);
• Protein Isolates (wheat, oats, barley, corn and flax) broadens amino acid profile.

Flax Factor
Omega3 fatty acids (alpha linolenic with lignans).

Vitamins and Minerals
• Vitamins (A, D, E and d-Biotin are added to B complex vitamin from yeast);
• Minerals (organic complexed trace minerals to raise bioavailability).

The amylases added to your horse’s diet via EquiPride™ include both alpha amylase and glucoamylase (aspergillus oryzac extract) to help mitigate problems. Additionally, there are other enzymes helping digest fiber, protein and minerals. Blended with the enzymes are oligosaccharides that help feed the beneficial bacteria and help keep their populations high enough to exclude pathogenic bacteria from getting a foothold.

A noteworthy component of the EquiPride™ blend is flax, which is best known for its rich source of omega 3 fatty acid, so often neglected in modern diets. Flax is one of the highest sources of lignans. Lignans contribute to immune function. The major lignan in flax is SDG (seicoisolariciresinol diglucoside).

Lignans from flax are being studied in human applications because of strong antioxidant properties that may play a positive role in certain cancers. This characteristic of lignans may also be responsible for reduction in atherosclerotic plaque formation noted in animal studies. The development of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes has been shown to be due in part to oxidative stress. The flax lignan SDG has been found to be effective in lowering the onset of both types of diabetes due to its potent anti oxidative ability.

All these factors and components of EquiPride™ add up to improved digestion allowing the horse’s immune system to maintain a wellness that virtually eliminates the need for costly gastric, joint, hoof and other chronic malady treatments, while giving energy, weight maintenance and a shiny coat to this magnificent animal.

And this final note – when digestion is improved, less total feed is needed. We are seeing forage requirements drop by over 20%. Depending on prices, one can recover nearly half the cost of EquiPride™ in feed savings alone!

EquiPride™ is the ounce of prevention that eliminates the pound of cure.
